John McCain Has a Message for Allies About Trump: ‘Americans Stand With You’

On Saturday, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) criticized President Donald Trump’s foreign policy with a message of allegiance to the United States’ allies on behalf of Americans.

McCain tweeted that the “bipartisan majorities of Americans” are in favor of free trade and globalization, and “supportive of alliances based on 70 years of shared values.”

“Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn’t,” he concluded.

McCain’s message comes in the wake of a reportedly tumultuous G-7 Summit between Trump and other world leaders.

A viral photo shared by the German government shows Trump, arms folded, being stared down by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron.

British Prime Minister Theresa May and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also appear in the photo, seemingly looking on from the sides.

The summit came in the wake of Trump announcing steel and aluminum tariffs on U.S. allies. In an effort to curb the disagreements, a joint communique was created to advocate for a “rules-based trading system.”

According to BBC, Canada, the U.S., the U.K., France, Italy, Japan, and Germany agreed on “free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade,” as well as, the importance to fight protectionism.

However, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later said in a press conference after Trump left the summit that retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. would still be implemented on Jul. 1.

In response, Trump tweeted on his way to Singapore that he instructed U.S. representatives not to endorse the communique.

He contrasted Trudeau’s behavior during the meetings, which he characterized as “so meek and mild” with him calling the tariffs “kind of insulting” and saying Canada “will not be pushed around” after the president left.

“Very dishonest [and] weak,” Trump tweeted. “Our tariffs are in response to his of 270 [percent] on dairy!”

Following the G7 summit, Trump set off for Singapore to meet with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. He landed on Sunday just before 9:00 p.m. local time and the meeting is set to take place on Tuesday.

This isn’t the first time McCain has criticized Trump and according to reports, the senator has requested that he not attend his funeral.
