New Billboard Won’t Let Sheriff Israel Forget Broward County Deputies Have ‘No Confidence’ in Him

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel is going to have a hard time forgetting his deputies have “no confidence” in him thanks to the new Florida billboard a police union erected on I-95.

“Governor Scott: There is no confidence in Sheriff Israel,” the Fort Lauderdale billboard, paid for by the International Union of Police Associations 620 Deputy Union, reads.

“Jokingly, it faces the north, towards the governor,” Union President Jeff Bell told Fox News.

The billboard comes after 534 out of 628 Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association members voted in April that they have “no confidence” in Israel, who has faced backlash in the wake of the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that took 17 lives.

The sheriff has been met with national criticism for his department’s handling the shooting as it unfolded, which included at least one deputy failing to enter the school and engage shooter Nikolas Cruz in a timely manner.

Additionally, his deputies were called to Cruz’s house on numerous occasions over the past several years but declined to arrest him.

In response to the vote of no confidence, Israel accused Bell and the union of attempting “to use the Parkland tragedy as a bargaining tactic to extort a 6.5 percent raise.”

“We are going to continue to speak out loud and make sure our voice is heard,” Bell countered. “It’s a strong message to put it right in front of Rick Scott of how serious we are.”

While the billboard will stay up for a month, Bell has indicated that his union’s next move is to present the vote to Gov. Rick Scott, who can suspend Israel, and ask him to “please make change and replace the sheriff with somebody who is capable of amazing leadership.”
