John McCain Reveals Surprising Truth — Says He Regrets Choosing Palin as 2008 Running Mate

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) reportedly wrote in his book that in hindsight, he regrets selecting former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Ala.) as his running mate during the 2008 presidential election.

According to The New York Times, in his upcoming book, McCain defends Palin’s performance but expresses his wish that he selected former Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) instead.

The senator reportedly addressed in his book that advisers cautioned him against selecting Lieberman because he supported abortion rights and caucused with Democrats.

His advisers warned that it would be a divisive move among Republicans and his chances at winning the election would be shot.

“It was sound advice that I could reason for myself,” McCain explains in the book. “But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had.”

He labeled his decision to pick Palin over Lieberman “another mistake that I made” regarding his political career and echoes the sentiment in a documentary.

Lieberman told The New York Times that the sentiment “touched me greatly” and he didn’t know McCain had regret about the decision until he watched the documentary.

The former senator visited with McCain last month while he was at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and he said he was doing fine but wanted to get out of the hospital.

“Look, this is a man whose whole life has been active,” he added.

McCain’s revelations come as he continues fighting an uphill battle against an aggressive and rare form of brain cancer.
