‘I Can Finally Arm Myself’: Female Kent State Student Brings AR-10 Onto Campus for Grad Photos

Kent State University graduate Kaitlin Bennett took her graduation photos with her AR-10 to advocate for students being allowed to carry firearms on campus.

Bennet posted one of the photos on Twitter, which shows her in a white dress with her graduation cap in hand and her AR-10 slung across her back.

She explained that now that she’s a graduate of the university, “I can finally arm myself on campus.”

She added that she should have been able to carry as a student, especially after the 1930 Kent State shooting when four students were killed by Ohio National Guardsmen.

While Bennett received a lot of support for the photo and for standing up for gun rights, she also received a lot of criticism. In a subsequent tweet, she posted another photo from her shoot and wrote that she has “no apologies” for the photos.

“As a woman, I refuse to be a victim and the Second Amendment ensures that I don’t have to be,” she tweeted.

The recent college graduate addressed the backlash she received for having an “assault rifle” in the pictures and detailed that an AR-10 “fires at the same rate as any modern pistol.”

“Don’t talk about gun control when you can’t even get your facts straight,” she tweeted.

Bennett also decorated her graduation cap with a firearm and the popular saying for gun rights activists, “Come and take it.”

During an interview with NBC News 4, she called it a “badass photo.” Kent State University’s policy prevents students, staff, and faculty from carrying a firearm inside buildings an on the campus grounds.
