Democrat Nashville mayor admits affair with ex-security detail chief

A widely popular public figure from the city of Nashville is taking fire this week for an extramarital affair she maintained with the head of her security detail.

Democratic Mayor Megan Barry went public with the scandal on Wednesday by issuing a lengthy apology to her family and the people of Nashville during a broadcasted news release.

Sordid affair

Barry was elected in 2015 under the promise of affordable housing, improvements to public education, and greater transportation options within the Tennessee capital. She claims that the affair began several months after she began her term, but that it wasn’t discovered until the pair’s spouses began speaking with one another.

The mayor also apologized to the family of her lover, Sgt. Robert Forrest, for the pain she caused them, and assured her husband, Bruce, that she was committed to their relationship. While Barry admitted that the affair was over, she did not say when it happened or under what circumstances.

Standing alone before a team of cameramen, Barry began a 15-minute monologue expressing her remorse and embarrassment over the scandalous affair. Addressing the citizens of Nashville, the first-term mayor suggested that forgiving her would be the Christian thing to do:

I know that God will forgive me, but that Nashville doesn’t have to. And I hope that I can earn their trust and I can earn your trust back, and that you will forgive me.

Barry was also sure to seek empathy from voters by referencing the recent untimely death of her son, Max, following an overdose from opioid painkillers. Barry said:

This is a very bad day. And I’m going to have several more bad days. But this is not my worst day. And I will tell you I know the difference between a mistake, I made a serious mistake, but this is not a tragedy.

Though Barry and Forrest accumulated more than $33,000 in travel expenses between January and October 2017, the mayor insisted that these were for business-related functions.

She maintains that no laws were broken during the course of the affair, and in effort to be completely transparent with investigators, her office has released all text messages and travel-related expenses to authorities.

Barry, who gave her statement dressed in all black, cautioned supporters to avoid drawing false equivalencies between her affair and the sexual abuse scandals currently rocking the political and entertainment world.

“The ‘Me Too’ movement is about women who have been sexually harassed and economically disadvantaged for hundreds of years,” Barry said. “This is about two middle-aged, consenting adults who had feelings for each other, and were human and had failings.”

Moral authority

Some of Barry’s critics have emphasized her hypocrisy following her recent response to an Evangelical affirmation of Christian sexual morality by the The Council on Biblical Manhood & Womanhood. The group issued their “Nashville Statement” this summer, affirming their belief that marriage is designed “to be covenantal, sexual, procreative, lifelong union of one man and one woman…meant to signify the covenant love between Christ and his bride the church.”

Barry denounced these beliefs, arguing that the “so-called ‘Nashville Statement'” is poorly named and does not represent the inclusive values of the city [and] people of Nashville.”

In light of the Democratic lawmaker’s marital indiscretion, some are wondering how she could claim to be a moral authority on marriage while simultaneously maintaining an adulterous affair. This discrepancy prompted Rod Dreher of The American Conservative to write:

Mayor Barry denounced the Evangelicals for their statement affirming orthodox Biblical sexual morality while she was banging her bodyguard — another woman’s husband — behind her own husband’s back.

While Barry will most likely weather the political storm, it is unclear whether her popularity and responsive damage-control will ensure that she remains in office. But one thing is for certain: after politicizing her own son’s tragic death, this is one Democrat who will stop at nothing to remain in office.
