Megyn Kelly reportedly furious after NBC picks Katie Couric for Olympics reporting

NBC is bringing back an old familiar face to co-host the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in South Korea — former Today show co-host Katie Couric.

And Megyn Kelly, one of Today‘s newest additions, isn’t all that happy about it. In fact, she’s reportedly “furious.”

A tantrum of Olympic proportions

When NBC announced who would be covering the Olympic games opening ceremonies, Kelly “threw an Olympic fit,” sources told Page Six.

But Kelly, a former Fox News primetime mainstay, only has herself to blame — she apparently wrote it into her agreement with NBC.

Page Six reported:

Television insiders say that Kelly insisted, when signing her $23 million-a-year contract with NBC last spring, that she could not be forced to do special events such as the winter games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, which start airing on the Peacock Network on Feb. 9.

But once Today vet Matt Lauer — who usually helmed special coverage, including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade — was ousted in November over sexual misconduct allegations, Kelly assumed she was next in line for the plum assignments.

“She thought she had it all played out perfectly, by saying ‘no’ before the Matt Lauer scandal,” the source told Page Six. “[The network was] stupid enough to put in her contract that she could say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’”

Kelly assumed wrong

When the network ousted Lauer, Kelly wanted the assignment on principle, but it didn’t work out that way — and Kelly was reportedly very open about her frustration.

“[Kelly] complained to her staff, she complained to her agent, so that [NBC News chairman Andrew Lack] would hear about the fact that she was unhappy,” the source told Page Six, “but he didn’t care.”

Lack had apparently come to grips with the fact that his new talent is “a diva” and that “she’s not going to be part of the NBC News…inner circle,” according to the source.

However, at least one other NBC insider disagrees. Page Six reported:

But an NBC News insider told us that there’s “zero truth” to this, adding that it’s “laughable since [the opening ceremony is] the least desirable gig in broadcasting, given the inevitable brutal reviews.”

The insider also disputed that Lack — the man who personally fired Lauer — thinks that Kelly is a “diva,” insisting that “no one at NBC has ever heard him ever use the word ‘diva’ about anyone.”

NBC News and reps for Kelly declined to comment.

Experience wins out

Couric was brought back into the NBC family because of her experience hosting such events.

Variety reported:

Jim Bell, president of production and programming for NBC Olympics, said he directly reached out to Couric a few weeks ago, noting that she has also co-hosted opening ceremonies three times before, in places like Sydney, Australia.

“It’ s a hard job” that requires some experience, he said.

The decision must have been easy for NBC executives — a known and proven talent trumped the reported temperamental “diva.” We can’t say we don’t blame them.
