Kaepernick Gets Much Worse News After Seahawks Postpone His Tryout

The Seattle Seahawks reportedly arranged for free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick to work out for them Thursday, but then postponed the trip to a later date.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team changed its mind because Kaepernick was noncommittal on whether he would resume his protests during the national anthem if he were signed.

Schefter reported that “the Seahawks wanted to know that Kaepernick wouldn’t kneel this season, and he was unwilling to give that assurance to them.”

One day later, Kaepernick learned that he might have missed a great opportunity to get back into the NFL as Russell Wilson’s backup in Seattle.

The Seahawks decided to sign Stephen Morris, a 25-year-old quarterback out of the University of Miami, on Friday.

The signing immediately brought howls of protest from Kaepernick supporters. They say the former 49er is being blackballed by NFL owners because of his national anthem protests, as Kaepernick himself claims in a collusion grievance he filed against the league.

Kaepernick first started protesting during the national anthem in the 2016 preseason.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said at the time.

Since opting out of his contract with San Francisco a year ago, Kaepernick has remained unsigned. The Seahawks have been one of the few teams that have expressed interest in the 30-year-old free agent.

Morris started 36 games for the Hurricanes, throwing for 7,896 yards with 49 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions.

He went undrafted in 2014 and signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent.

Morris was released the next year and was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts.

After the Colts cut him in 2017, the Redskins signed Morris to a reserve/future contract last January. But Washington waived him in April.

While he hasn’t thrown a pass in the regular season, Morris has played well in the preseason, completing 63 percent of his passes for 1,292 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions.
