Some California Residents Will Soon Receive Universal Basic Income — With No Strings Attached

Low-income residents in one California city will soon start receiving no-strings-attached paychecks every month as Stockton lays the groundwork for universal basic income.

Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs announced the experimental program — Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration — this week and said the initiative will offer low-income residents $500 per month, KOVR-TV reported.

The money comes with no strings attached and can be used for virtually anything.
“Food, maybe pay some bills, gas in the vehicle, a lot of different things. Families from this area, the inner city, it will go a long way for sure,” resident Christopher Moses said.

The mayor hopes to have the program up and running by the end of the year.

Tubbs is standing by the controversial policy.
Here’s how the mayor defended the initiative:

“They’re written off. They don’t have the money because there is something wrong with them, and I want to demonstrate that, when given the opportunity, that people, especially the people of Stockton, will make good choices and the right juices for themselves and their families.”

But that’s not all.

The program, funded by the Economic Security Project, also includes hiring three artists who will design murals “used to start a conversation on the universal basic income project so that people will take it upon themselves and go and do research on it, and see how impactful it can be for our community.”

As it stands right now, there are no work qualifications for an individual to receive the basic income checks.
